In the 1980s and 90s clinicians were beginning to talk about their social responsibility to engage in end-of-life care conversations with patients and families.
"I don't know what to say" was a statement often made by physicians and nurses in health care surveys. That statement was repeated time and again in the literature and in dialogue groups among clinicians, clergy therapists and lay people.
